4.5 stars(1,234 reviews)

The 1912 Bar District is a compact entertainment quarter occupying a row of restored Republican-era buildings on Changjiang Road, just steps from the Presidential Palace. Named for the year the Republic of China was founded in Nanjing, the district repurposes handsome early 20th century brick-and-stone buildings as cocktail bars, restaurants, live music venues, and clubs. During the day it is a quiet, photogenic stretch of heritage architecture; after dark it transforms into the liveliest nightlife destination in the city.

The district is free to walk. Most venues open in the late afternoon and run until midnight or later.

Bars and Nightlife

The district houses a mix of cocktail bars, wine bars, live music venues, and clubs catering to a range of tastes. The outdoor terraces lining the pedestrian lane are the most appealing feature — on warm evenings, tables spill out between the heritage buildings, creating a buzzy, sociable atmosphere. Live bands and DJs perform at several venues on weekends. The crowd skews young and local, with a growing number of visitors drawn by the combination of historic architecture and evening energy.

Heritage Architecture

The Republican-era buildings themselves are worth appreciating, even outside of nightlife hours. The brick facades, arched windows, and Western-influenced detailing are characteristic of Nanjing's role as China's capital during the Republic period (1912–1949). Several buildings have been carefully restored, and the streetscape offers a glimpse of the architectural style that once defined central Nanjing.
