Concession-era port of the north
Tianjin (天津, Tiānjīn) is one of China's four direct-administered municipalities, situated on the Hai River where it meets the Grand Canal about 120 kilometers southeast of Beijing, near the Bohai Gulf. The municipality covers a large area that includes the urban core on the Hai River, the Binhai new area port district on the coast, and surrounding suburban and agricultural counties, with a population of over 13 million. Tianjin is a major port, an industrial center, and historically the maritime gateway to Beijing.
Tianjin's history as a significant settlement dates from the Yuan dynasty, when it became a granary and staging point for grain shipments to Beijing, but its modern character was shaped by the treaties of 1858 and 1860, which opened it as a treaty port after the Second Opium War. Britain, France, the United States, and later Japan, Germany, and others established concessions along the Hai River, giving the city one of the largest collections of foreign-built architecture in China. After 1949 the foreign concessions were closed and Tianjin developed into a major industrial center, and in recent decades the Binhai new area has expanded its role as a port and free-trade zone.
Today Tianjin offers visitors a leafy, concession-era city of European boulevards and riverside promenades, alongside a fast-modernizing port metropolis. The old British, French, and Italian concession districts along the Hai River, the Five Great Avenues (Wudadao) of foreign-built villas, and the Italian-style town are the city's main architectural attractions, while the old lanes around the Ancient Culture Street and the Tianhou Palace record its older Chinese merchant past. The city's food traditions, including the stuffed buns (goubuli) and twisted dough sticks, the cross-talk comedy scene, and the Binhai port district round out a city long overshadowed by Beijing next door.

The Five Great Avenues (五大道, Wǔ Dàdào) are a grid of leafy streets in Tianjin's former British concession lined with more than 2,000 European-style villas built from the 1920s to the 1930s.

Tianjin Eye
The Tianjin Eye (天津之眼, Tiānjīn zhī Yǎn) is a 120-meter Ferris wheel built directly on the Yongle Bridge over the Hai River, making it the only wheel of its kind in the world to stand on a bridge.
A slow rotation at dusk offers views of the illuminated concession-era buildings along the river, the modern skyline beyond, and the bridges that thread across central Tianjin.
