China's classical gardens and canal town
Suzhou (苏州, Sūzhōu) is a prefecture-level city in southern Jiangsu Province, situated on the Grand Canal and the lower Yangtze about 100 kilometers west of Shanghai. The municipality includes the historic canal-laced urban core, the industrial park district to the east, and surrounding water-town counties, with a population of over 12 million. Suzhou is one of the wealthiest cities in China, a major high-tech manufacturing center, and one of the country's most celebrated cultural destinations.
Suzhou was founded in 514 BCE as the capital of the Wu kingdom, and it developed into a prosperous canal and silk-trading center under the Tang and Song, reaching its cultural peak under the Ming and Qing, when its scholar-officials built the classical gardens for which the city is now famous. The Grand Canal, which runs through the old city, made Suzhou a major commercial hub, and its silk, embroidery, and printing industries were among the most developed in imperial China. In the reform era the city added the Sino-Singapore industrial park and became one of the leading manufacturing economies of the Yangtze Delta.
Today Suzhou offers visitors a celebrated old city of canals, gardens, and silk traditions, alongside a fast-modernizing industrial metropolis. The Humble Administrator's Garden, the Lingering Garden, and the other Ming and Qing gardens, together a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are the city's main attractions, while the old lanes around Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street, with their stone bridges and canal-side houses, preserve the canal-town fabric. The Tiger Hill pagoda, the Suzhou Museum, and the surrounding water towns of Tongli and Zhouzhuang round out one of China's most elegant urban destinations.

Humble Administrator's Garden
The Humble Administrator's Garden (拙政园, Zhuōzhèng Yuán) is Suzhou's largest and most famous classical garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of lotus ponds, zigzag bridges, and moon gates laid out in the 16th century.
Its water-centered design borrows views of distant pagodas and creates ever-shifting scenes as you move through pavilions and covered corridors, setting the standard for Chinese garden art.
Tiger Hill
Tiger Hill (虎丘, Hǔqiū) is a wooded hill on the northwestern edge of the old city crowned by the Yunyan Pagoda, a seven-story tower that leans noticeably and dates back more than a thousand years.
The site blends legend, history, and garden scenery, with sword ponds, stone bridges, and teahouses scattered across a landscape that has drawn visitors since the Tang Dynasty.
