Meiling Palace (Meiling Gong) is an elegant Art Deco villa nestled in the forest on the western slope of Purple Mountain, built in the 1930s as a residence for Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Mei-ling. The house combines Western architectural styling with Chinese decorative motifs and is surrounded by mature trees and landscaped gardens that turn particularly beautiful in autumn. Its location, history, and carefully preserved interiors make it one of the most atmospheric Republican-era sites in Nanjing.
Admission is included in the combined Purple Mountain scenic area ticket, roughly 100 yuan. The palace is open from 7:00am to 6:00pm in summer and 7:30am to 5:30pm in winter.

Architecture and Interiors
The villa was designed in a sophisticated Art Deco style popular among Nanjing's Republican-era elite, with curved facades, geometric detailing, and large windows that frame views of the surrounding forest. The interior preserves period furnishings, including Soong Mei-ling's private chapel, reception rooms, bedrooms, and a small kitchen. The mix of Western luxury and Chinese refinement reflects the couple's cosmopolitan background and the cosmopolitan culture of 1930s Nanjing.
Historical Significance
The palace served as one of Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling's private residences during the Nanjing decade (1927–1937), when the city functioned as the capital of Republican China. It witnessed informal government meetings and social gatherings among the Nationalist leadership. After 1949 the property was preserved rather than destroyed, and it now offers visitors a rare glimpse into the domestic world of China's Republican-era ruling couple.
Forest Setting
The villa is surrounded by dense forest on the western slopes of Purple Mountain, and the approach road is lined with plane trees and flowering shrubs. The gardens are especially beautiful in autumn when the surrounding ginkgo and maple trees turn gold and red. The quiet, wooded setting provides a peaceful contrast to the monumental scale of the nearby Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum.

The palace is inside the Purple Mountain scenic area, best reached by bus or taxi from **Xiamafang Station** on Line 2. A taxi from central Nanjing takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. It is typically visited in combination with the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum.
