The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall (Qinhua Rijun Nanjing Datusha Yunan Tongbao Jinianguan) is a solemn memorial and museum dedicated to the victims of the mass atrocities committed by the Japanese military following the fall of Nanjing in December 1937. The memorial is built over one of the sites where victims' remains were discovered, and its stark, contemplative architecture — designed to move visitors through a carefully paced sequence of outdoor spaces, exhibition halls, and memorial gardens — creates one of the most emotionally powerful museum experiences in China. A visit is not easy, but it is deeply important.
Admission is free. The memorial is open Tuesday through Sunday, 8:30am to 5:00pm (last entry at 4:00pm). It is closed on Mondays. ID or passport is required for entry.

Outdoor Memorials
The approach to the memorial passes through a series of outdoor sculptural installations depicting suffering, resistance, and grief. The scale and emotional intensity of these works prepare visitors for the exhibitions within. A large wall bearing the names of identified victims lines one approach. The architectural design of the memorial complex — angular, dark stone surfaces, reflecting pools, and deliberately stark landscaping — establishes a tone of somber remembrance from the first moment.
Exhibition Halls
The interior exhibitions document the historical events through photographs, film footage, survivor testimonies, recovered artifacts, and archival documents. The displays cover the fall of Nanjing, the weeks of mass killing and brutality that followed, the International Safety Zone organized by foreign nationals, and the post-war tribunals. The exhibitions are extensive, graphic in places, and presented with restraint. English-language captions are provided throughout.
Memorial Garden and Meditation Hall
The exhibition route concludes in a memorial garden and meditation space designed for quiet reflection. A large peace memorial stands at the journey's end. The entire visit is designed as a sequential emotional experience — from confrontation with the historical facts to a space for contemplation and hope.

**Yunjinlu Station** on Line 2 exits near the memorial. The memorial is in the southwestern part of the old city. Allow at least two hours for a meaningful visit. The memorial atmosphere is solemn — dress and behave respectfully.
