The Nanjing Museum is one of the three largest museums in China (alongside the National Museum in Beijing and the Palace Museum), housing nearly 430,000 artifacts spanning Chinese civilization from prehistoric times to the modern era. The museum complex consists of six interconnected buildings, each dedicated to a different theme: History, Art, Special Exhibitions, the Digital Gallery, the Republic-era Streetscape, and the Intangible Heritage section. The collections are world-class, the galleries are spaciously designed, and the recreated Republican-era street is a unique and charming feature found nowhere else.
Admission is free but requires advance reservation through the museum's WeChat mini-program. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00am to 5:00pm (last entry at 4:00pm). It is closed on Mondays.

History Gallery
The main History Gallery walks chronologically through thousands of years of Chinese civilization with artifacts drawn from the museum's vast reserves. Highlights include Neolithic jade objects, Han Dynasty pottery and jade burial suits, Six Dynasties Buddhist sculpture, Tang Dynasty gold and silverwork, and Ming and Qing imperial porcelain. The gallery benefits from generous display space and excellent lighting, allowing individual objects to be appreciated in detail.
Republic-era Streetscape
The museum's most unusual feature is a faithfully recreated Republic-era (1920s–1940s) street occupying an entire building. Visitors walk through a miniature neighborhood of vintage shopfronts — a tea shop, a tailor, a post office, a cinema, a barbershop — each furnished with period-authentic fixtures and staffed with costumed attendants. Some shops are functional, selling traditional snacks and handicrafts. The effect is immersive and charming, offering a tangible taste of the Nanjing that served as China's national capital.
Art and Special Exhibitions
The Art Building houses rotating displays of painting, calligraphy, textiles, and decorative arts from the museum's collection. The Special Exhibition building hosts major temporary shows, often featuring international loans or thematic exhibitions. The Digital Gallery uses multimedia technology to present artifacts and stories in interactive formats, appealing particularly to younger visitors.

The museum is on Zhongshan East Road near the Purple Mountain scenic area. **Minggugang Station** on Line 2 exits close to the museum entrance. The museum is near Jiming Temple and within reach of the Presidential Palace, making it easy to include in a central Nanjing itinerary. Allow at least three hours for a thorough visit.
