Purple Mountain (Zijin Shan) is Nanjing's most iconic natural landmark, a forested ridge rising 449 meters on the eastern edge of the city that cradles an extraordinary concentration of imperial tombs, memorial sites, temples, and scenic overlooks within its wooded slopes. The mountain has been considered sacred ground for centuries and houses three of Nanjing's most important attractions — the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, and the Linggu Temple scenic area — along with an observatory, botanical garden, and numerous hiking trails. A full exploration of the mountain could easily fill an entire day.
A combined scenic area ticket covering the three main sites costs around 100 yuan. The mountain is accessible from dawn to dusk, with individual sites having specific hours.

Major Sites
The three anchor attractions each occupy different sections of the mountain. The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (see separate entry) dominates the central slope with its monumental staircase. The Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum (see separate entry) occupies the southern slope with its atmospheric Sacred Way. The Linggu Temple area (see separate entry) sits in the eastern valley with its remarkable Beamless Hall and pagoda. Each warrants at least one to two hours, and a shuttle bus connects the three areas within the scenic zone.
Hiking and Nature
Beyond the major monuments, Purple Mountain offers extensive hiking through deciduous and mixed forest. Trails wind to the summit, where views extend across Nanjing and to the Yangtze River. The Purple Mountain Observatory, one of China's oldest modern observatories, sits near the summit and is open to visitors. In spring, the mountain's plum blossom and cherry blossom groves draw large crowds, while autumn brings vivid foliage in the deciduous sections. The mountain's forest provides a welcome refuge from Nanjing's intense summer heat.
Practical Tips
The mountain scenic area is large — comfortable shoes are essential, and bringing water and snacks is recommended. Start early in the morning to have any chance of covering all three major sites in a single day. The internal shuttle bus saves significant walking time between sites. On weekends and holidays, the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in particular can be very crowded.

**Xiamafang Station** on Line 2 is the main transit hub for the Purple Mountain area, from which buses and taxis serve the various entrance points. A tourist bus loop connects the main scenic area entrance to the individual sites. From central Nanjing, the journey takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes by taxi.
