Xinjiekou is the commercial heart of Nanjing, a busy intersection and surrounding district where department stores, shopping malls, neon-lit boulevards, and underground retail corridors converge in the geographic center of the city. The area has been Nanjing's primary shopping district since the Republican era, and several handsome early 20th century buildings survive alongside modern glass towers. While not a tourist attraction in the traditional sense, Xinjiekou is the pulse point of modern Nanjing and an unavoidable hub for transit, shopping, and dining.
The area is free to walk. Most shops are open from 10:00am to 10:00pm.

Xinjiekou's retail offerings range from luxury brands in Deji Plaza and Golden Eagle to mainstream fashion in the numerous mid-range department stores and underground shopping corridors radiating out from the central intersection. The underground shopping area is extensive, connecting multiple buildings and subway lines in a sprawling network of retail. Electronics, fashion, cosmetics, and food are all well represented.
Republican-era Architecture
Several Republican-era buildings survive in the Xinjiekou area, including former banks and commercial buildings with Western-influenced facades. These heritage structures provide visual contrast to the modern towers and serve as reminders of Nanjing's history as a national capital.
Food
The side streets around Xinjiekou offer excellent dining, from Nanjing's famous duck restaurants to regional Chinese cuisines, hot pot, and international options. The area is particularly strong for late-night food, with many restaurants and street food stalls operating until well past midnight.
